EXCLUSIVE: 'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel Going To Paris, Switzerland, Maybe 3-D

Posted 4/30/10 2:13 pm ET by Adam Rosenberg in News

One of the surprise successes of 2009 was "Sherlock Holmes." Not because it wasn't any good (it was great) or because it featured a cast of unknowns (Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law anyone?). No, "Sherlock Holmes" was a surprise success, to the tune of $515 million in worldwide ticket sales, because it came out a week after and went up against the record-shattering blockbuster juggernaut that was James Cameron's "Avatar." So it shouldn't come as any surprise to hear Downey, speaking to MTV's Josh Horowitz at the junket for next week's surefire summer hit "Iron Man 2," talking about the coming sequel.
"Yes, I think we'll be abroad," he said, referring to rumblings that Holmes would be leaving London behind for his next adventure. "A bit of Paris, a bit of Switzerland by the end, if I'm not mistaken."
Less certain is which characters will be returning. Holmes and Watson are essential of course, but the first movie featured a number of other key characters who aren't necessarily staples of Arthur Conan Doyle's original tales. "It's hard to say [who is coming back]," Downey said. The biggest question mark is on Holmes' love interest in the first outing, played by Rachel McAdams. "Because Irene Adler only appeared in one of the stories of Doyle's reservoir of activities. But we'll find out quickly."
Downey confirmed that he'll be doing "Gravity" next, with director Alfonso Cuaron, and then following that up with the "Holmes" sequel. Given the competition the first movie faced at the box office with "Avatar," Josh also asked if we might be seeing round two with the great detective in 3-D.
"It's hard to say," Downey said. "Certainly, if you don't do it as an option, then you don't have that option. If the last six months have shown anything, it's that audiences like options, and they will take advantage of them. And you're leaving a bunch of dough on the table if you don't shoot something in 3-D."

Downey Jr discusses 'Iron Man 3' plans

Robert Downey Jr has revealed that Iron Man will return in a third movie to be made after The Avengers is complete.
The actor recently reprised his role as Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, starring opposite Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson.
Despite the sequel only being released this week, Downey Jr confirmed that plans are already afoot for the character to return in a solo outing after The Avengers, which will see Iron Man team up with The Hulk, Thor and Captain America on the big screen.
He told MTV news: "I think it's [Iron Man 3] going to go down. [The Avengers is] supposedly first on [Marvel Entertainment's] docket. I have some pretty strong ideas, but they never seem to be too discordant with what the creative execs at Marvel are thinking anyway.
"It's all there. There's a little bit of a bunch of different storylines from different decades [in the comics]."

Iron Man 2 grounded by ash cloud

The world premiere of Robert Downey Jr's new outing as the Marvel superhero, originally scheduled to take place in

London next Monday, has been relocated to Los Angeles.

With the help of his shiny red-and-gold suit, he's capable of pulling off superheroic feats of spectacular magnitude – but even Iron Man has been forced down to earth by ash wafting from the still erupting Icelandic volcano.

Producers of Iron Man 2 confirmed yesterday that the sequel's world premiere, which had been set to take place in the newly-opened Westfield Vue cinema in London next Monday, will now shift to LA due to continuing travel uncertainty. Cast members Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke and Samuel L Jackson, along with director Jon Favreau, will now be walking the red carpet in California instead, although a special screening is still set to unspool at Westfield on 26 May.
Elsewhere, teenage star Miley Cyrus and her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth will be unable to attend the UK premiere of their new film The Last Song in Leicester Square tonight. Demi Moore's latest flick The Joneses, due to premiere in London early next week, is also likely to be hit.
Iron Man 2's distribution in Europe, where it will be rolled out from 28 April, seems to have been unaffected. "Luckily, we had the copies delivered a week ago, just before the volcano erupted," an employee at German distributor Concorde told the Hollywood Reporter. "If they had been delayed, it would have been tight getting the film dubbed and mixed for the 6 May [German] release." In any case, most major releases can now be delivered digitally to cinemas via satellite, so Europe is unlikely to be bereft of new Hollywood movies if the ash cloud fails to dissipate in the near future.
Further ahead, the ongoing travel chaos might – in the worst case scenario – affect the Cannes film festival, due to start on 12 May. A Croisette sans overseas stars would be a rare event, as would a Marché du Film that wasn't vying for the chequebooks of distributors from lucrative territories such as Asia and the US.
